Forgas Band Phenomena - Acte V 2012 - DR 13

Acte V is the fifth installment from French drummer/composer Patrick Forgas. The Forgas Band Phenomena feature a seven piece lineup including Sebastien Trognon (saxes and flute), Dimitri Alexaline (trumpet and flugelhorn), Benjamin Violet (guitar), Karolina Mlodecka (violin), Igor Brover (keyboards), Kengo Mochizuki (bass). The ensemble is able to overcome its relatively large size and remain tight - whipping through high energy passages as well as laying back through some languid moments. Super tight stuff here and chops from hell. There is a maturity to the compositions that demonstrate super human ability only when needed for the sake of the tune. The new album is accompanied by a bonus DVD featuring the band's incendiary performance at Nearfest in June 2010. This was one smoking set as violinist Karolina Mlodecka tore it up.

Trubrot - Undir Ahrifum & Lifun 1970/1971 - DR 13

2 original recordings on 1 CD: - Undir Ahrifun (1970) - Lifun (1971) Re-issue 2003, Certainly one of the greatest bands to emerge from the frozen plains of Iceland, trubrot evolved from the second greatest band to emerge from Iceland, Hljómar aka The Icelandic Beatles aka Thor's Hammer (who appeared on Diggin' For Gold & Nuggets II). Featuring the same line-up as Thor's Hammer but with a different musical direction; the group shifted its focus from their fuzz-laden Dutch beat like sound to a harder edged heavy progressive rock vibe. Music from the land where the sun rarely sets and when it does it stays down... intense! This is great music for any fan of 1970s progressive rock and should appeal to fans of King Crimson or Focus who are searching for something with big, cold, teeth.

This record could well be filed in the Tangerine Dream-clones department, if it had not been for the title track "Colossus" which is a fabulous and very original composition by anyone’s standard. I have never heard anything quite like it, it is a wonderful amalgam of synth pop, new wave, kraut rock, and prog rock all rolled into one beautiful up tempo tune, the saxophone playing is out this world, and the groove is close to inventing electro.

Originally known as Walpurgis, The Lost Album is supposed to have been recorded in Los Angeles and predates the official Divine Comedy release. We have been told that the band were re-named by their manager as Phantom, and we know that the line-up which recorded Divine Comedy definitely came from Rochester, a small town about 30 miles from Detroit.

On both albums the vocalist sounds like Jim Morrison and indeed Capitol Records issued a statement that it was leading to legal action by Elektra.

What of the music? Divine Comedy is highly rated by many, it has a mystical sound and is recommended. Tales From A Wizard and Welcome To Hell, which are both rather melodramatic, are arguably the strongest tracks but a consistent standard is maintained throughout.
